Metrics: Trials by the Numbers

Asian countries continue to be increasingly important locations for today's clinical trials. In a study of clinical investigators signing on to conduct new clinical trials in 2007, PAREXEL found the following:

  • 131 clinical investigators in China (including Hong Kong) signed on to conduct FDA-regulated trials in 2007, up 6% from 2006. With this, China became the 25th ranked country for clinical investigators in 2007, up from 31st in 2006.
  • India saw the number of clinical investigators signing on to conduct FDA-regulated research surge 29% in 2007. The 395 Indian investigators doing so last year vaulted India even higher in the top 10 countries in which FDA-regulated research initiated in 2007 would be conducted (8th in 2007 from 10th in 2006). For the first time, this put India in front of such countries as the United Kingdom and Italy.
  • Perhaps suggesting a rebound in Japan's clinical trials market, Japan saw the number of clinical investigators signing up to conduct FDA-regulated trials more than quintuple last year, from 24 in 2006 to 154 in 2007.
